Bill was the son of Samuel and Rosannah Hyatt Birchfield. He married Cinthia Elizabeth Linn/Lynn about 1864 in Monroe County. Bill joined the Confederate forces during the Civil War, enlisting on June 1, 1861, with Company D, 25th North Carolina Infantry, the first company in what was then Cherokee County but now is Graham County, NC. While still in uniform, he stopped at the Parson's Turnpike Tollgate, the home of Cinthia's father and mother, to spend the night. He fell for Cinthia that night and promised to return. A courtship began and soon a wedding took place.Bill and Cinthia began housekeeping in what is now known as the Lang Farley Cove on the waters of Rocky Point Branch, three miles upstream from from Cheoah Dam in Graham County, NC. They lived in Cades Cove, TN for awhile. Later, about 1890, they became tollkeepers at the Parson's Turnpike station near Deal's Gap. Soon after they left the Tollgate, Bill died and Cinthia went to live with one of their daughters on Forney Creek in Swain County.
