C E Porter is Taken by Death' Pioneer resident of this county died at his home Friday night, result pneumonia.
Death at 10:30 Friday night removed one of the pioneer residents of this county when C E Porter, widely known farmer and a native of Appanoose county, died at his home on the farm where he was born over 72 years ago. Death was the result of double pneumonia superinduced by an attack of influenza. His exact age was 72 years, 8 months and 12 days. He had been ill for two weeks.
The death of Mr Porter brings sadness to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances over the county and in Centerville and Cincinnati, where he was especially well known. He was born on the farm five miles south of Centerville, where his death occurred, and most of his years had been spent there. He knew Appanoose county when it was little more than a vast space of prairie land, seeing most of the towns and cities within its boundaries come into being. His long residence had acquainted him with ancestors of many residents of the county at the present time, and through that acquaintance he also knew present generations, and he knew and was known by more people than but few others residing here.
He grew to manhood in the era when wrestling a living from the soil required not only brain but brawn and determination; a willingness to face countless hardships known to the young people of today, and thus he acquired the strong body, alert mind and keen judgement characteristic of successful farmers of the old school. Living close to nature, he early in life learned to love and fear his creator, became converted and joined the Methodist church, living a devoted christian life to the finish. So long as health permitted he was active in church work, and sought to live a life in keeping with the teachings of his master.
He took an interest in civic affairs, promoting those things which would tend to better the community in which he resided. He was a kind and accommodating neighbor and held the love and esteem of all those who knew him best.
Mr Porter is survived in death by the following children, the wife preceding him in death four years ago and two children, Mary and Clara dying in infancy: Briggs Porter of Lodi, Calif, Bert, Ethel, Mernie, Alice, Louise, Grace, Clarence and Gladys. Funeral services will be held from the home Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock conducted by Rev S P Trostle, of the Cincinnati Methodist church. Burial will be in the Porter cemetery.
