Hudson Durand "Pete" Gilliand, age 75, died Friday night, May 8, 2009, at his home in Bay Minette following a lengthy illness. Born December 9, 1933 in Greenville, Alabama, he was a native of Bay Minette. Mr. Gilliand retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a Master Gunnery Sergeant after serving 23 years for his country. After retirement, he graduated from Faulkner State Junior College with an Associates of Arts degree. He then went to work with Independent Life Insurance Agency and retired as a staff manager after 15 years where he was a member of the presidents club, and the Multi-Millionaire Club for outstanding achievements. He was an ordained Baptist Minister and last served at Minneola Baptist Church until his health began to fail him. He was a member and deacon at Southside Baptist Church in Bay Minette He was recently honored as an honorary deacon due to no longer being able to serve as a regular deacon.
He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Marian Gilliand, his children, Lee (Carl) Thompson, Bay Minette, AL, Hudson Randall (Patsy), Bay Minette, AL and Anne (Martin) Flowers of Camden, AL. Grandchildren; Sandra (Buddy) Brock, Bay Minette, Stephen (Christie), Thompson, Bay Minette, Kevin (Sue Ellen),Vicenza, Italy, Ricki (Cory) Barton, Rabun, Duston Steele, Bay Minette, Stephanie (Kevin) Crawley, Rockfield, MD, Victoria (Shannon) Britt, Rabun , Tammy (Duane) Eady, Rabun, Jeremy (Shelea) Flowers, Camden, AL, Joey (Leslie) Flowers, Pine Hill, AL, Jessie (Josh) Morgan, Camden, AL, Jimmy (Mandy) Waldrop, Bay Minette, Debra "Shelly" Smith, Bay Minette, and Ricky Waldrop, Bay Minette; 28 great grandchildren, Chris Wickline, Roxie and Gracie Brock, Valerie, Joshua, Nathan and Rachel Thompson, Anna Lee and Elena Thompson, Ashley and Emily Barton, Brandon Bryars, Brannigan and Brandon Crawley, Allison (Brandon) Stophel, Kaitelyn Hadley, Dillon Rider, James and John Britt, Charity and Chaynce Eady, Beth and Jackson Flowers, Tatum, Lance and Jake Flowers, Brayden Waldrop, Devin Smith, and 2 expected this summer. He is also survived by one brother, Douglas Gilliand of Milton, FL and three nephews, Frank, Dean and Todd Gilliand. Devoted caregivers were Fleecy McCurdy, Ramona Felps and Raymond Brown.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Hudson and Ila Lee Gilliand; brothers Charles Nolan of Bay Minette and David Michael of Swansboro, NC; one daughter Patty Waldrop of Bay Minette, one great grandson Daniel James Brock.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Flowers, Joey Flowers, Josh Morgan, Stephen Thompson, Kevin Thompson, and Duston Steele. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 13th from 6 – 9 pm at Norris Funeral Home in Bay Minette. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Norris Funeral Home on Thursday, May 14 at 11:00 am with Reverend Larry Patterson officiating. Interment will follow at the Bay Minette Cemetery.
