Word of the sudden passing of Mrs. E. P. Bailey came as a shock to the community last Friday morning. Mrs. Bailey had been ill with the flu and had not fully recovered when she was stricken on Dec. 24 and was taken to the York hospital where she underwent an operation from which she didn't rally and passed away Thursday evening, Dec. 27, 1945.
Winifred Roberts was born on April 14, 1888, near Springfield, Nebraska, where she grew to womanhood and finished high school. She continued her education at the University of Nebraska and the State Normal at Peru, Nebr., where she graduated. Thereafter, she taught at Alliance, Carleton and Omaha.
She united with the Congregational Church at an early age. And after coming to Carleton to make her home, she has taken an interest in the affairs of the Brethren Church of which her husband was a member.She was married to E. Preston Bailey of Carleton, Nebr., July 18, 1915, and resided in this vicinity since that time.Mr. Bailey is an extensive farmer and a business man of Carleton. He is also one of the directors of the state fair and a director of the Thayer County Fair.
Surviving, besides her husband, are two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Parker and Eileen Bailey of Carleton; a son, Eric P. Bailey, serving on a submarine on the Pacific coast; a brother, W. T. Roberts; four sisters, Mrs. C. A. Laing of Alliance, Mrs. F. E. Sullivan and Miss Margaret Roberts of Springfield, and Mrs. Charles W. Foster of Gordon.
Funeral services were held from the Brethren Church at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 30, with Rev. W.L. Thomas officiating, and burial in the Carleton Cemetery.
