Civil War: Company K, 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry
Joseph Burton was a resident of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, when he enlisted as a private at Philadelphia on February 16, 1865. He was mustered into Company K, 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, later that same day. He was described as being 5' 4” tall with a light complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair. At the time of his enlistment, Joseph indicated he was 18 years old, born in Philadelphia, and that his parents were born in New York and Pennsylvania. Private Burton's regiment was later consolidated with the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry as part of the 1st Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry at Washington, D.C., on June 17, 1865. Private Burton was mustered out of military service at Cloud's Mills, Virginia, on July 13, 1865. (History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865)
After the war Joseph enlisted for three years as a bandsman in the U.S. Regular Army at Norfolk, Virginia, on March 22, 1866, and served in Company F and Company H, 12th U.S. Infantry. At the time of this enlistment, Joseph indicated he was [still!] 18 years old and born in Philadelphia. Private Burton was discharged at Savannah, Georgia, on March 22, 1869. (U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1866)
He then moved to California where in 1875 he married Mary Estella (surname unknown). They had relocated to Tip Top, Yavapai County, Arizona, by September 1878 (1880 US Census). Joseph, then living in Prescott, informed the census taker in 1900 that he was actually born in California in October 1849* (1900 US Census). Joseph filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Prescott on September 19, 1904, and received application No. 1,324,731 and certificate No. 1,106,875. His pension file confirms his service for the above two enlistments. Joseph Burton was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle (Los Angeles), California, on January 8, 1909, from his home at Prescott, Arizona, where his wife was still living. Mary had relocated to Los Angeles by 1919, where she was living with her married daughter, Mrs. Margaret Ware, at 2323 Barry Ave., Sawtelle (Los Angeles). Joseph also lived there and told the census taker in 1920 that he was born in Pennsylvania (1920 US Census). Mary died on January 12, 1925, and was buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery. Joseph, now a widower, in April 1930 once again told the census taker that he was born in Pennsylvania. When Joseph died at the Sawtelle soldiers' home less than two months later on June 1, 1930, he was buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery and his personal effects were surrendered to his daughter Nellie, then a resident of San Luís Obispo County, California.
