State police told The Sentinel this morning they believe that "motives other than the occult" are involved in the "satanic ritual" death of a Rochester man.
The dismembered body of the victim, William Anthony "Tony" AULT, 21, whose home address is in the 1200 block of Elm Street, was found in a DeKalb County farm field Dec. 13.
Police have established that he was murdered on Sept. 26, said Officer Rick DINEHART of the information office of the state police post in Fort Wayne.
A tip led officers to the scene, Dinehart said.
On Fridaty, DeKalb Circuit Court in Auburn unsealed court papers that were filed on Dec. 30 in which two men were charged in connection with the death.
The papers had been held secret while police tried to find other suspects in the case, Dinehart said.
DeKalb County Prosecutor, Monte BROWN, said he would seek the death penalty against Jimmie Lee PENICK, 24, Shelbyville. Also charged, with conspiracy to commit murder, was Mark Edward GOODWIN, 20, Indianapolis.
Penick is held without bond.
State police said that Penick, Goodwin, Ault and several other persons were in Auburn working for an amusement company at the DeKalb County Fall Free Fair when the murder took place.
The suspects took Ault to the farm field and "killed him as part of a satanic ritual," police said. However, officers said this morning that further investigation has led them to believe that the motives for killing Ault were "other than the occult."
Police said they learned of the murdern when Mark Edward GOODWIN's father, William GOODWIN, told them by telephone on Dec. 12 that his son had witnessed the murder of a man in DeKalb County as part of a satanic sacrifice.
Dinehart said that police believe the other suspects no longer are in northeastern Indiana.
Auburn is about 27 miles north of Fort Wayne, just off Interstate 69.
