Emily Bivens was a daughter of Henry and Massey Bevin. When she married Joseph W. Holmes (Jan. 20, 1870) her father, Henry gave them all his land on the north side of Slaydon's ( now called Nichols) Creek on which to build their home. Joseph had been living in Louisiana and ran a large herd of cattle on his ranch there. This was somewhere near the present day town of Vinton, LA.and so just across the Sabine River.Joe and Emily had children: Charlie A. born in 1972, Adria (Spears), Augustus Holmes born 1876 and Belle (McMahon), Joseph M. born 1879, B. Holmes, Matt, Ida and Ben Holmes born 1889. After Joseph's death of pneumonia Emily married C.W. Smith ( Newton Co.Marriage Records) on Jan. 11, 1894. They had twin daughters, Mary (Mims) and Martha (McClain) who were raised in Hartburg. When Emily died, the children brought her back and buried her beside Joseph in Trout Creek Cemetery. Emily was remembered as a petite' lady, dressed in black, and every hair in place. She liked things neat and the first thing she did in the morning was to put on her make-up and arrange her hair. There is no headstone, only the cement tiles which completely surround the Joseph W. Holmes plot.
