Joseph was born in England and came to this country around the age of 22. He arrived in New Orleans and worked his way up the Mississippi. He married three times, had 20 children, and crossed the west to live out his last years in Washington. He lived mostly in Memphis, Missouri and Lyle, Washington. His first wife divorced him, his second wife died and his third out lived him. He mostly farmed but did many other things to make a living.
The horse in the picture is Nell. He rode her everywhere. She would stand by a stump so Joseph could get on.
