The Rev. Dr. Theodore L. Food began preaching at the age of 18. He served during the Civil War in Company C of the 125th Pennsylvania Volunteers.

In 1878 he co-founded the Chautauqua Assembly Daily Herald and in 1880 established the Chautauquan (the official publication for the Chautauqua Association). Prior to his retirement, he sold the Chautauquan magazine in 1898.
