Mary Charlotte "Lotty" Hoerrmann Cain was born December 12, 1877 to John Martin Hoerrmann and Christina Rachael Hetzel Hoerrmann of Adair County, Missouri. The 1877 birthdate is consistent with U.S. Census records. Lotty grew to adulthood on her family’s farm in Adair County, about 3 1/2 miles southwest of Novinger, Missouri. She is believed to have attended Novinger school.

Lotty married William Isaac Cain about 1896. They had two Children, Estill Virgil Cain (1897 - 1987) and Edith Oletha Cain McMasters (1899 - 1986).

The 1880 U.S. Federal Census listed Charlotte Hoerrmann as the youngest child (2 years old) living with Christina Hoerrmann on the family farm. Christina’s children John (21), Rosanna “Rosa” (18), Martin (17), Jacob (14), Emma (11), Adam (8), and Mary Charlotte “Lotty” (2) worked together to manage the family farm of about 700 acres. At the time, Lotty's mother, Christina Rachael Hetzel Hoerrmann, was 42 years old and a widow. Lotty was a young teen in the attached family photo of Christina and her children, dated to the early 1890s.

The 1900 Census listed Mary and W. I. Cain living at E Patterson Av in Kirksville, Adair County, MO with two children, Estill and Edith. Kirksville was approximately 8 miles northeast of the Hoerrmann family farm. W. I. Cain was recorded as being 29 years old and “at school”. Likely, he attended Kirksville’s North Missouri Normal School (and Commercial College), established in 1867. William is thought to have attended the school's Commercial Course. North Missouri Normal School was later renamed Truman University.

By the 1930 Census, Lottie and William Cain resided at 4314 Dayton Av, Seattle, King, WA. William was the owner of a retail grocery store, while Lotty maintained the home.

Lotty died on or about February 25, 1955 and is buried with her husband at the Acacia Memorial Park in Seattle Washington, King County USA. The grave marker identifies them respectively as Mary C. Cain (1876 ~ 1955) and William I. Cain (1871 ~ 1965).
