Hiram Carpenter was something of a nomad. During his lifetime he moved across country from New York to Washington state, stopping along the way in Illinois, Iowa, and Colorado. Hiram was born in New York between 1825 and 1827. He married Susannah Crizer (Kreiser, Creaser) in Putnam County, Illinois in 1845/46. Hiram and Susanna had nine children: Louisa J. (1847-1904), Eleanor (1849-?), Mary E. (1850-?), Sarah (1852-1903), Maria Amy (1853-1928), Albert S. (1855/56-?), Elmina W. (1859-?), William Henry (1864-1936) and John H. (1868-?).
By 1900, Hiram and Susanna Carpenter lived in Stevens County, Washington, in the Hunters area. It is not known exactly when they died. The last legal document signed by Hiram in 1903 was for the transfer of land to his son, William Henry; with the provision that the "land not be mortgaged or encumbered in any way" while Hiram and Susanna were alive. Hiram and Susanna are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
