WARSAW -- Fred E. Maust, 78, of Warsaw and formerly of Nappanee, died at 2:05 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 6, 2010) at Warsaw Meadows. He had been ill for a year.

He was born Aug. 31, 1931, in Elkhart to Fred E. Sr. and Mabel (Wise) Maust. On March 1, 1963, he married Karole A. Slabaugh. She died March 28, 2006.

He is survived by one son, Shane (Shanna) Maust of Milford; four sisters, Patricia (Phil) Hochstetler of Nappanee, Gertrude Gerkey of Decatur, Mich., and Audrey (William) Warren and Beverly Morris, both of Elkhart; and two brothers, William F. Maust of Nappanee and Tim (Darlene) Maust of Dunlap.

Preceding him in death were five sisters, Virginia Hoke, June Silvers, Margaret Weaver, Dorcas Berry and Katherine Maust; and one brother, Charles Maust.

Mr. Maust graduated from New Paris High School and worked at Monitor Coach and Holiday Rambler in Wakarusa and the U.S. Postal Service, and ran F&K Crafts from his home. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of Nappanee Church of the Brethren and the NHRA. He was active in 4-H and served on the Elkhart County 4-H Fair Board.

A private family funeral service with military rites is planned. The Rev. Byrl Shaver of Nappanee Church of the Brethren will officiate. The body will be cremated, with inurnment at South Union Cemetery at a later date.

Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, 950 N. Main St., Nappanee, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be given to Nappanee Public Library.
