Emmett E Barry was born on November 9, 1887, in East St. Louis, Illinois, to William and Minnie (Murray) Barry. The family moved to Alameda, California around 1897, and were living in San Francisco in 1906. They survived the great San Francisco earthquake of that year. The family lived in a tent in the Panhandle of Golden Gate Park during the disaster.

Emmett served in the Army during WWI, and was in and out of Veterans homes with his war disability. He died on June 8, 1940, at the age of 52.
