Author, best known for a series of books, published under his own name, that featured the character of Uncle Wiggily Longears, an engaging elderly rabbit. Garis and his wife Lillian were possibly the most prolific children's authors of the early 20th century. Garis was a reporter for the Newark Evening News newspaper when he wrote his first Uncle Wiggily story for the Newark News in 1910. The newspaper continued to publish Uncle Wiggily stories until Garis's retirement in 1947, by which time, he had written nearly 15,000 stories. Many of the stories were compiled into a series of 21 books. Garis also worked for the Stratemeyer Syndicate, writing under various pseudonyms. He wrote many of the books for the Tom Swift, Bobbsey Twins, Motor Boys, and Campfire Girls series.
