Entered the service August 1, 1918 at Galesburg; to Camp Dodge; made Sergeant September 18, 1918; overseas service; 26 days in the trenches; 11 months in the service; discharged at Camp Grant July 25, 1919.

ALFONSO ALLEN, WORLD WAR VET, EXPIRES IN OHIO
Alfonso L Allen, colored, of 1412 Mulberry Street, died this morning in a Cleveland, Ohio hospital after an illness lasting two weeks, local relatives learned today. He was the son of the late John R and Susan Allen. The body will be brought here to the Fletcher Funeral Home.
Mr. Allen was a World War veteran who served 11 months, and was 26 days in the trenches. He entered the service here August 1, 1918, and went to Camp Dodge. He was made a sergeant in Company B, 809th Infantry, Second Army, on September 18, 1918, and was sent overseas. Mr. Allen was born in Galesburg on November 5, 1892.

The body of Alfonso L Allen, World War veteran who died in a Cleveland, Ohio hospital Wednesday morning, will arrive here tonight on the CB&Q, accompanied by his sister, Mrs. Margherita Fleming, 1412 Mulberry street. The body will be taken to the Fletcher Funeral Home, and funeral arrangements will be announced Friday.

Alfonso Leslie Allen, formerly of Galesburg, died in a hospital in Cleveland, Ohio at 4 o'clock on Wednesday morning. He was the son of the late John R and Susan Allen, and was born in Galesburg, November 5, 1892. He received his education in the city schools, attended Weston School. He was employed as a cook at the Union and Custer hotels and at the Galesburg Club, and later followed this profession in Cincinnati and Cleveland, being for many years employed at the Cincinnati Masonic temple and on the New York Central railroad. He left Galesburg in 1922 for Cincinnati, and resided in Cleveland the past three years.
During the World War, on July 31, 1918, he entered the US service at Camp Dodge, IA and was discharged July 24, 1919 at Camp Grant after serving eleven months overseas as Sergeant with Company B, 809th Pioneer Infantry. He was a member of St. John's AME Church in Cleveland, Ohio.
His parents preceded him in death. He leaves five sisters and one brother, namely Mrs. Eva Solomon, Mrs. Margherita Fleming, Miss Glaze Allen, Mrs. Susan Rodgers and Harold Allen of Galesburg, and Mrs. Ethel Dawson of Rock Island, who is seriously ill at this time. Other survivors include an uncle, George Cannon, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Albertha Allen, three nephews and two nieces, all of this city, and several cousins.
The body arrived in Galesburg Thursday night, accompanied by his sister, Mrs. Fleming. Funeral rites will be held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon from Allen Chapel, AME Church, the Rev AE McWhorter in charge. Friends may call at the family home, 1412 Mulberry Street, this evening and Saturday morning.

Funeral services for Alfonso L Allen were held at 2:30 o'clock on Saturday afternoon from Allen Chapel, AME Church, in charge of the Rev AE McWhorter. Louis Carter sang "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me" and "Kiss My Hand, Precious Love," with Mrs. Irene Harvey at the organ. Burial was in Linwood Cemetery. Pallbearers, all ex-service men, were Henry Corpening, Rudolph Lyons, Edward Brown, Goldus Ogden, Guy Brown and Clarence Lane.
Those present from out of the city were Miss Henrietta Mayes and Mrs. Susie Reading, of Peoria, and Abe Dawson of Rock Island.
