Joseph and Sarah (Johnston) Moore along with her mother Catherine (Bell) Johnston and two brothers, Joseph and George Bell and his family, came with the group from Tennessee in 1842 to the Territory of Iowa written about by her son, David Woods Moore. Sarah Shaw (Johnston) Moore died, two years after arriving in Iowa, on 8 September, 1844, at the age of 33 years, 11 months.

According to a letter from her son, David Woods Moore to Nellie Moore, she caught a bad cold coming home from church in the rain which developed into pneumonia which resulted in her death. She died at her home in the Tennessee neighborhood of Columbus City Township.
