Fergus MacKain served in the first World War with the 23rd Royal Fusiliers.

MacKain's picture postcards, skillfully drawn and delicately coloured, were well known to soldiers in the field as the "Tommy's Life" series showing aspects of a soldier's life. He also produced greeting cards, and other illustrations.
