Augustus was the son of German immigrants August Emanuel Deininger and his wife, Johanna Helene Obenland. He was born in June of 1838 in Pennsylvania. Augustus was one of ten children born to the couple; however, only four of his brothers and sisters survived childhood.

According to the "History of Pennsylvania Volunteers 1861-1865", Augustus served in the Civil War, on the Union side, fighting in Company A, 148th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. Augustus enlisted on August 25, 1862 as a Sergeant and was "mustered out", or discharged, as we say now days, on July 14, 1865. When he left the Army he was a Private. I wonder what he did to get the reduction in rank? Augustus applied for a Civil War Pension on March 18, 1882.

In about 1860, Augustus married a young lady named Hannah Hoover. The couple had 11 children: Johanna, born in 1861; Sarah, born in 1862; Jennie, 1866; Charles Sumner, 1868; Rosie A., 1870; Warren A., born in 1872; Christian F., born in 1872; James C., born in 1873; Allen B., born in September, 1876; Mary V., in July 1878, and Lester A, born in August, 1881.

It's been hard to find Augustus in the U.S. Census. In the 1900, he and his wife, Hannah, (as listed in the record) were living in Hughesville, Lycoming County, in Pennsylvania. He was 61 and a drayman. In the 1910 Census, he and his wife were living in the same town. Augustus was 71 and working as a letter carrier.

Augustus bought lot 79 in Union Cemetery, however, there are no stones which would show that he and his wife are buried there. Three of their children have stones on that lot; namely Charles, Rosie and Warren.
