Thomas Yonge Bingham, 96, of Panama City, went peacefully home early Thursday morning, May 7, 2009. Tom was born April 22, 1913 in Pensacola, Florida to Frazier & Fahnie Bingham and moved to Panama City in 1938. In the local community and throughout the Northwest Florida Region he was widely-known and highly respected for his long years of service and leadership in the financial, social, religious and humanitarian arenas. Tom was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and an Elder and joyfully taught Sunday School for over 53 years. He held an honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Gulf Coast Seminary. As a renowned entrepreneur, he is remembered for the manufacture of Carter Craft boats and his work as a Broker for A. G. Edwards & Sons, among his numerous other interests and pursuits. Tom served many years as a member and as president of the Bay County Chamber of Commerce where he founded the First Friday Club and was an integral member of that organization's Military Affairs Committee. He proudly organized and served in the Panama City Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and was a member of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Lion's Club, Bay County Historical Society, Gulf Yachting Association, United Commercial Travelers, Anchorage Children's Home, and numerous other organizations. Tom was a 75 year Mason and a veteran of World War II, Pacific Theater of Operations, where he distinguished himself as captain of a World War II Army Transportation Corps vessel serving in the South Pacific. Preceeded in death by three sisters and three brothers, he is survived by his wife, Martha Vickery Bingham, two daughters, Sue Herring (Jody), Holly Suber (Stephen), eight grandchildren, Rachel Stewart (Danny), Ty Suber, Diane Stewart (Sean Chiodo), Mimi Suber, Vickery Callaway (Wes), Sarah Stewart (Donny), Shaun Herring, David Herring, five great grandchildren, Audun Cowart, Caleb Armour, Alec Chiodo, Emma Stewart, Bingham Callaway and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Richard Watson and the Reverend David Warren officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 5 – 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Panama City Rescue Mission, Anchorage Children's Home, or Hope Street Missions Uganda, 100 Ox Bottom Rd., Tallahassee, FL 32312, in memory of Tom Bingham.
