BORN:SOUTH OF IRELAND

While many other women served in the Civil War in a variety of capacities, Mrs. Ann Durrett may be the only woman who actually has an official Civil War confederate service record. Carded records at the National Archive indicate that on October 16, 1861, she "enlisted" as matron of the 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment at Auburn AL. She was evidently paid for her services, at least part of the time, as one of the carded records, Muster Roll of Company E 18th Alabama Infantry for Nov 30 to Dec 31, 1861, indicates that she was last paid by Maj Hodges to Nov 30, 1861.
