James Bryant (II) served in the Revolutionary War at Guilford Courthouse Battle, March 24, 1781, along with his brother, Isaac Bryant.

James Bryant (II) was of "Huguenot descent." His father Jacques Briand emigrated from England to Virginia before 1700 and settled in Manaintown about 1703.

He was a large land and slave owner. A member of the Court and Secretary of King William Parish in 1744. His home was located on Jones Creek near the mouth of Dutoy Creek in Powathan County, Virginia. He owned lands near Midlothian and Chesterfield Counties. During the Revolutionary War, coal was mined from these lands.

He was highly respected and an influential citizen of the section of Virginia.

His will was written on Sept. 25, 1783 and probated in 1783,
Powathan Co., VA.
