George Richard Peacock was born in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1843, his father being identified with the early lead mining interests of the place. He died on Friday, June 8, after a long illness with dropsy. His parents came to Lansing when he was five years old and this has been his home since. He was of English parentage.
His father conducted a general store at Columbus, then the principal trading point here, Lansing being an embryo village inhabited only by Indians and a very few whites. When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Peacock was one of the first to offer his services for the defense of home and our native land, serving for some time in the 9th Iowa Calvary and upon the expiration of his enlistment period in this organization he re-listed, serving for the full four years of the war.
Mr. Peacock was married to Katie Wagner, whose death took place six years ago last April. One son, George Frederick, was born to them. He died about eight years ago in St. Paul, where he was engaged in the manufacture of jewelry.
