Baptized St. Albans Abbey, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, 26 July 1618, son of Thomas and Joan (Antrobus) Lawrence. Merchant from St. Albans, Hertfordshire, who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 on the "Planter." (On 2 April 1635, "John Lawrence," aged 17, was enrolled at London as a passenger for New England on the Planter). First settled in Ipswich; moved to Flushing NY by 1645, & New Amsterdam by 1657. Died between 7 January 1698/9 (date of will) and 15 May 1699 (date of probate).
Married by about 1643 Susanna _____. She was living as late as 15 May 1699, when she was named executrix of her husband's estate.
John Lawrence was grandson of JOAN ANTROBUS {1635, Unknown}, brother of THOMAS LAWRENCE {1635, Ipswich} and WILLIAM LAWRENCE {1635, Ipswich}, and brother-in-law of GEORGE GIDDINGS {1635, Ipswich} and THOMAS BURNHAM {1642, Ipswich}.
On 16 November 1644 [NS], John Lawrence was one of the six men who received the patent for the town of Hempstead from William Kieft, Governor of New Netherland. Since he became a Flushing patentee less than a year later, he may never have resided at Hempstead.
John Lawrence moved from Flushing to New Amsterdam toward the end of the Dutch period, and managed to remain in political favor during most of the New York administrations for the remainder of the seventeenth century.
