NELLIE GOSS SPENCER

Southport -- Nellie (Nell) Spencer of 504 North Atlantic Avenue in Southport died on August 14, 2008. Born on August 20, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Luther Patrick Goss and Esther Grissom Goss of Durham. She was the widow of F.W. Spencer and was predeceased by her oldest son, Frederick W. Spencer.
Mrs. Spencer is survived by sons, Jerry W. Spencer and wife Kathy of Concord, NC and L. Thomas Spencer and wife Mary of Mars Hill, NC; daughter in-law, Sandy Spencer of Southport, 11 grandchildren: Jerry W. Spencer Jr., Austin L. Spencer, Steven F. Spencer, Jon F. Spencer, Bryant P. Spencer, Michael R. Spencer, and Francis (Frank) Spencer, Diane S. Blake, Wendy Spencer, and Matt and Chris Olay; and 5 great-grandchildren, Taylor, Kaitlyn and Hampton Spencer, Graham Carter, Darby Cox. She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Stella (Patty) S. Jones, and stepson, Daniel W. Spencer. In addition, for more than 40 years "Mema" provided caring and nurturing day-care in her home for many children of the Southport area and those much-loved children also survive.
Funeral services will be held Monday August 18, 2008 at 11 am at Antioch Baptist Church, 1700 Midway Road, Bolivia, NC with Reverend Monroe Cooke officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Spencer's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
