October 15, 1923 - October 1, 2020
Edna Rebecca Pannell Pugh entered her eternal heavenly home on October 1, 2020, at the Jasper General Nursing Home in Bay Springs, Mississippi. She was born on October 15, 1923, to William Edmund Pannell and Cora Allie Luke Pannell and spent her childhood in New Albany, Mississippi.

At the age of 16, she married her sweetheart, James Edwin Pugh, and they were married for 52 years. After Reverend Pugh answered the call into the ministry, they served at several small churches throughout the years. It was at Montrose Baptist Church in Montrose, Mississippi that they found "home" and she served as Pastor's wife for 22 years and remained a member until her death. Embracing the churches she served, Edna filled many roles from Sunday School teacher, choir director, and Vacation Bible School leader. She also wrote and directed the church's Christmas programs through the years. Possessing the greenest of thumbs, she would provide flowers for the church from her yard or her beloved rose garden.

Each spring she would till and plant a huge garden by hand. One year she lost a treasured ring while working in her garden and had given it up for lost. However, it was found the next year by her sons while playing in the dirt. They wrapped it up and put it under the Christmas tree for her. Throughout her life, Edna had a knack for making wonderful meals out of 'not much' for her family of 8 children. She also served as Post Mistress for both the Montrose and Louin Post Offices. If a letter came through heading to one of her family, you might get a handwritten note scribbled on the envelope from Mamaw.

Edna was a beloved mother to her 8 children, grandmother to 19, step grandmother to 2, great grandmother to 35, step great grandmother to 8, great great grandmother to 6, step great great grandmother to 6. The family highlight each year was gathering at the "Big House" for Thanksgiving. The tables were filled with food while her family filled the house and yard with love and laughter. Her apple tarts were legendary among her family and were known to disappear before lunch was even served. Edna had a deep love for music and singing, and many family gatherings included time around the piano singing hymns.

As much as she loved her husband, family, church and many friends, Edna's dearest love on this earth was for her Savior, Jesus Christ, with whom she is now talking face to face. Her deep abiding faith sustained her throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son James Edwin Pugh, Jr.; daughter Rebecca Pugh Irby; sons-in-law Arthur (Buddy) Irby and Richard Chatam; granddaughter Sharon Denise Pugh; brother Olen Pugh; and sister Joan O'Kelley. She is survived by six children: David (Beverly) Pugh, Mary Smith, Dora Chatam, Ray (Debbo) Pugh, John (Barbara) Pugh and Rachel (Donn) Jackson, and daughter-in-law Martha Pugh. She leaves a legacy of 18 grandchildren: Rebecca (Ed) Cahill, James Edwin (Nicole) Pugh III, Stacy (Rodney) Trest, Susan Irby, Sandra (Shannon) Shivers, Bo (Kerri) Irby, Jason (Laura) Pugh, Kelly (David) Pilger, Hunter Bunch, Eric (Cyndi) Smith, Wade (Katie) Chatam, Emily (John) Tingle, Claire (Shaun) Mayatte, Landon (Kayla) Pugh, Keri (Michael) Arrington, Jill Pugh, Lindsey (Eric) Schneider and Tyler (Mary Ellen) Jackson. She is also survived by her 35 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren: Michele (Jessie) Polk and Christopher (Chrissy) Kelley; 8 step great grandchildren and 6 step great great grandchildren.

Due to COVID-19, a family private viewing will be held at Colonial Chapel in Bay Springs, Mississippi on Sunday, October 4, 2020, from 12:30-1:30. Graveside services will be at 2:30 in the Montrose Cemetery in Montrose, Mississippi. Please wear a mask.

The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Becky Ulmer, Twanna Clayton, Hollie Martin and the entire wonderful staff at "The General" for the compassionate, loving care given to our mother for the past 8 years. They lovingly called her "Mamaw" also.

Memorials in her name may be sent to Montrose Baptist Church in Montrose, Mississippi.
