"Lum," was 67 at his death on March 24, 1955. After a three-month illness, he died in the old Gardner-Webb Clinic which was then across the street from Gardner-Webb College.
Columbus' death certificate, signed by Sam J. Crawley M.D., stated the cause of death:
broncho pneumonia, congestive heart failure, arteriosclerios, and hypertension.

Columbus & Bertha are buried at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, where they were members. Their farm was sat directly across the street from the church.
