Harvey served in the Civil War in Company 3, 49th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
He was a farmer and a carpenter in civilian life. The family moved around a lot: from Massachusetts, to Illinois, to Iowa.
He was in the State Penitentiary, West Point, Lee Co., Iowa in 1885.
It is unknown how and why he ended up in Leavenworth.
