Funeral services for life-long Alexandria resident and prominent businessman--Paul Anderson--was scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday, April 12) from Calvary Lutheran church.
Anderson was stricken Saturday afternoon while servicing a funeral the Anderson Funeral Home was handling. He was rushed to the Douglas County Hospital where he died several hours later. He was 59.
Owner of two Alexandria businesses which bear his name "Anderson Furniture" and "Anderson Funeral Home", Paul solely managed them both plus the real estate which had been accumulated by the Anderson family over the years. The Anderson name has been associated with the furniture business in Alexandria since 1872...the year immigrant John Anderson arrived from Sweden. Paul was the third generation.
An outstanding high school athlete in Alexandria, Paul was also president of his senior class. Spending summers at the store and becoming acquainted with the work at the funeral home seemed to form a natural pattern which would determine that Paul was to attend the University of Minnesota to earn his degree in Mortuary Science.
A business partner with his father, Carl, until Carl's death in 1955, Paul Anderson was active in Calvary Lutheran Church and served on numerous civic organizations. Long time funeral home employee, Darrel Flaig, commenting on Paul, said Monday that "Paul was a great help to people in time of need and shared with them his love and kindness. His gentle ways, and his kind hearted chuckle, will always be remembered by all who knew him."
Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, LaVonne, three sons: David and Thomas, students at the University of Minnesota, and James; one brother, Karl John of Alexandria and aunt, Alma Anderson. Interment will be in Kinkead cemetery.
