Phoebe Sherrig Summerhays, age 75, died at her home Wednesday, January 17, 1990 of heart failure.

Born October 15, 1914, in Orchard, Nebraska to Alexander Z. and Hazel Ure Griggs Sherrig. Married Joseph R. Summerhays, August 7, 1936, Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Phoebe lived most of her life in the Salt Lake area and was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. An accomplished musician serving as a Ward organist for over 40 years. She supported her husband in his singing as his accompanist and played for many other musicians. She passed her love of music on to her children. She held Ward and Stake leadership positions in the Relief Society and YWMIA. From 1976 through 1978 she and her husband served a mission in the Washington D.C. Visitors Center.

Active as a volunteer worker at the LDS Hospital, the American Cancer Society, Temple Square Visitors Center, and at the Chamber of Commerce in St. George, where she and her husband spent their last few winters. Her beautiful home was always open to those in need.

Phoebe was forever young, walking three miles a day until the day she died. Her youthful beauty belied her age. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Janet.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph R.; sons, J. Terry (Anna), Salt Lake; Jeffrey P. (Teri); Del Mar, California; Steven R., Salt Lake; Daniel S. (Connie), Murray; a daughter, Mrs. Reed (Susan) Hailes, West Bountiful; 24 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. G. Dayton (Rosemary) Hughes, Winchester Bay, Oregon.

Funeral services Saturday, January 20th, at 12 noon, 21st Ward Chapel, 2nd Avenue & K Street. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple on Friday evening 6-8 pm and at the Ward on Saturday, one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Murray City Cemetery, 5600 South 800 East.
