Asa's obituary (the name and date of the newspaper are unknown) reads as follows:
"FIND BODY OF CIVIL WAR VETERAN NEAR FORT LEAVENWORTH. Had Been Missing Since October 5 - Wandered Away From Doctor's Office. HIS NECK WAS BROKEN."
The obituary related that Asa's body was badly decomposed. It stated further that he was 80 years old, was a resident of Bain City, and was formerly a resident of the National Military Home. His birth date was given as 19 October 1842. The article said that Asa was a Civil War Veteran, having served in F Company, 16th Regiment, Indiana Infantry, and that he left a widow and ten children, none of whom resided in Leavenworth. The article related that Asa was buried in the National Cemetery at Leavenworth, Kansas.
Interestingly, Asa's death certificate lists his birth year as 1842, while one of his Bureau of Pensions documents (Joyce's Asa Pension #7) lists his year of birth, apparently correctly, as 1843
