Late resident of Woodburn (OR), November 9, in a Portland (OR) hospital. Survived by widow, Mrs. Lillian Maple, Woodburn; daughter, Mrs. Marcia Fitzsimons, Portland (OR); son, Tom Hunt, Portland (OR); sisters, Mrs. William Bragg, Mandan, North Dakota, Mrs. LaVerne Parrish, Alton, IL, Mrs. Rod Rives,Greenfield, IL, Mrs. Charles Smith, Medora, IL, Mrs. Leslie Breden, Hardin, IL; brothers, Herman Maple, Peoria, IL, Homer Maple, Medora, IL, Clarence Maple, Jr, Medora, IL, Kenneth Maple, Rockwell, IL; four grandchildren also survive. Services, Thursday, Nov. 12 at 11am St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Rev. Daniel Ferry officiating. Interment Belcrest Memorial Park. If friends wish contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children or St. Paul's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.

Howard Maple attended Oregon State University (1926-1929), starring in baseball and football. As a senior quarterback for the Beaver football team, he led the Beavers to an upset of easily-favored New York University at Yankee Stadium. In 1930 he appeared in eight games with the NFL Chicago Cardinals as a wingback. He played in six seasons of minor league baseball and one season of major league baseball (1932) as a catcher for the Washington Senators. He later coached several sports at Oregon State University and Willamette College (now University). During World War II, Maple served in Alaska for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He owned a sporting goods store in Salem and a car dealership at Bend. Later he worked at the Chamber of Commerce for several Oregon cities and managed the Oregon State Fair.
