John Edward "Eddie" Phillips, 90, of Shenandoah, died Dec 24,2008. He was born Sep 15, 1918, in Shenandoah, a son of John Wise and Bessie Lee Nauman Phillips.
He was a 1937 graduate of Shenandoah High School and just this spring celebrated his 71st high school reunion with the Shenandoah Alumni Association. He was an avid baseball player in his early years and played for various leagues in the Valley and also played on the Merck basketball team. He was a Purple Heart veteran of World War II having served in the European Theatre in Company B 284 Corps of Combat Engineers. He retired from Merck and Co. in Elkton in 1978 after 32years of service.
On April 4, 1940 he married Mildred Elizabeth Williams, who preceded him in death on Nov 15, 1992.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, he was also predeaced by two brothers, Harold Phillips and William Phillips and three sisters, Evelyn P Needy, Margaret P Fogle and Mildred P Switzer.
Surviving are his daughter, Lois Jeanne Comer and husband, Vincent "Buddy" Comer, of Shenandoah. Also surviving are his grandson, Mark Vincent Comer of Shenandoah, and granddaughters, Lois Elizabeth Painter and husband Ron, of Luray, and Laney Michelle Dallas and husbad Randy of Shenandoah.
The last nine years of his life were spent totally absorbed in his four great-grandchildren, whom he saw nearly every day- Aaron and Camaron Painter and Bailey and Leah Dallas. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Phillips was a member of Shenandoah VFW Post 8613, the Epicurean Club and St. Peter Luthern Church in Shenandoah.
The funeral service will be held at St. Peter Luthern Church on Central Avenue and U S 340 in Shenandoah on Sunday, Dec 28. at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Patti Covington and Mark Briehl officating.
Burial will follow at the Rest Haven Cemetery in Shenandoah.
Family night will be at the Hyger Funeral Home in Elkton, Va., on Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. Active pallbearers will be members of the Shenandoah VFW.
