Funeral services for Gustav Dahl, whose death at a La Crosse hospital on August 15 was reported by The Republican last week, were held Saturday from the home of his daughter, Mrs Ben Nelson and the French Creek Lutheran church. The Rev. Johan Olsen officiated.
Gustav Dahl was born in Vordal, Norway, in 1856. When he was three years of age his parents came to America, settling in La Crosse county. Their first home was a crude dwelling dug into the side of a hill. That was the boy's home five years. The Dahl family came to Trempealeau county in 1861 taking up land which is now the Fred Hagen farm. There the boy was reared to manhood. His marriage to Lev Lindem took place in 1876. Soon afterward they settled on what is now the Clarence Dahl farm, whic they operated a number of years adn then moved to Elk Creek. Three years later they returned and bought the farm in Abraham's Coulee, now occupied by their son Edwin. This was their home 26 years. Then they took up their residence on the Peter Weverstad farm near Frenchville, where Mrs Dahl died 12 years ago. To them were born 8 children, two of whom survive. These are Edwin Dahl and Mrs Ben Nelson. There are 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Mrs Tole Thompson and Mrs Ole Thompson are sisters. The last 8 years of Mr Dahl's life were passed at the home of his daughter.
