Helen Roberta "Bert" Vial, 85, of Berwick, died Monday,Jan. 14, 2008. She was a resident at Bloomsburg Health Care Center. Beloved mother of the late Ensign Terry Vial, she is survived by her sisters, Gladys Lewis and Beatrice Gibson, both of Berwick. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Born in Bloomsburg on March 22, 1922, Helen was a daughter of the late John and Ruth (Gulliver) Vial. A graduate of Bloomsburg High School who worked at the American Car and Foundry before pursuing employment at Berwick Weaving, she retired in the mid-1980s. Helen was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Berwick. She belonged to the Christian Women's Club and was a former Sunday School teacher.
She was a co-founder and former president of the Meals on Wheels program in Berwick. She was also active in the Homemakers Club, the Garden Club and helped operate the Berwick Hospital Gift Shop. Along with her parents and son, Helen was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold and William Vial. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1000 Orange St., Berwick. The Rev. Peter Raser, her pastor, will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date in the Rose Lawn Cemetery,Berwick.
