J. Frederick Hoffman
J. Frederick HOFFMAN, 81, 6210 N. 700 East, Lafayette, died Monday aboard a cruise ship near Santiago, Chili.
He was a prominent attorney with Hoffman, Luhman & Masson Attorneys at Law, Lafayette, and a former Rochester resident.
Arrangements are pending at Foster & Good Funeral Home.

Prominent Lafayette attorney J. Frederick HOFFMAN, founder and senior partner of the Hoffman, Luhman & Masson PC and its predecessors, age 81, of 6210 N. 700 East, Lafayette, died Monday while on a cruise with his wife, Patricia [HOFFMAN], near Santiago, Chile.
Arrangements are pending the return of his remains to the United States at the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester.

J. Frederick HOFFMAN, 81, Lafayette, and Sonoita, Ariz., died Monday, Oct. 20, in Santiago, Chile.
Born April 2, 1922, in Rochester, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan in 1944, attended the Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan and received his law degree from Harvard University in 1947.
He practiced law in Chicago, Ill., from 1947 through 1955. He practiced law in Lafayette from 1957 until his death, as senior and founding partner of the law firm of Hoffman, Luhman & Masson PC, and its predecessors. He served as Tippecanoe County Attorney from 1971 to 1982, and again from 1995 to 1997.
He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Indiana State Bar Association, the Indianapolis Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association. He was a member and past president of the Tippecanoe County Bar Association and was a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association and the American Judicature Society. He was also a Fellow of the Indiana Bar Foundation. A tireless supporter of the provision of legal assistance for the poor, he was a founding member and past president of the Legal Aid Corporation of Tippecanoe County, serving on its board for 25 years, and was recipient of the Indiana State Bar Association's Pro Bono Publico award. As a member of the Bar Association of the Seventh Federal Circuit, he served as general chairman of its Committee on Defense of Indigents from 1967 to 1971, and as its treasurer from 1979 to 1987.
Active in civic affairs, he was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Frank O'Bannon and was long-time director of Farmers and Merchants Bank, Rochester. He also served as director of Meals on Wheels, Visiting Nurses, Tippecanoe Arts Federation, Wildcat Creek Foundation and was active in many other community organizations. He was a member of the Michigan and Harvard Alumni Associations and the Indiana Society of Chicago.
His many interests included history, opera and ornithology. He regularly attended performances of the Lyric Opera in Chicago and the Indiana University Opera. He was renowned for his interest and expertise in animal husbandry and farming, owning farms in Fulton and Tippecanoe Counties, and spending many summers on his working ranch near Hanna, Wyo.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia BENNETT HOFFMAN, with whom he traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, and most recently to Tahiti, the Marquesas Islands and Easter Island.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14 at Soller-Baker Funeral Home, 400 Twyckenham Blvd, Lafayette. Memorials may be made to the Greater Lafayette Community Foundation designated for the J. Frederick Hoffman Fund, P.O. Box 225, Lafayette, IN 47902, or the the charity of one's choice.
