Services for John Stewart Thompson, 60, Kissimmee, Fla., formerly of Doland, were held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at Osceola Memorial Gardens, Kissimmee, Fla., and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Doland.
Mr. Thompson died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in Kissimmee, Fla., of a massive heart attack.
He was born May 8,1948, in Huron to Larry and Dorothy (Hahn) Thompson. He graduated from Doland High School in 1966 and attended SDSU in Brookings. He and his former wife, Alice M. Turner (Teeny) were parents of two children: Alice M. Thompson and John S. Thompson, Jr.
John was a construction foreman who worked on projects such as Disney World and many hospitals and schools in the Orlando area.
Favorite pastimes were gardening, reading, fishing and playing with his grandchildren. "Big John" was known for his great sense of humor and one would often hear his rumbling laughter after having played a practica joke on friends and family. There were few people he did not call friend and he gave his all if they needed a helping hand. Although he lived in Florida for many years, a big part of his heart always remained in South Dakota.
Survivors include his two children: Alice (Michael) Bass and John Thompson, Jr., Kissimmee, Fla.; four grandchildren: Madisyn, Montana, Mitchell and Malakai Bass, Kissimmee; his mother: Dorothy Thompson, Redfield; three sisters: Christine Moore, Water-town, Roxie (Ron) Decker, Redfield, and Deb Thompson, Minneapolis, Minn.; two brothers: Stan "Rusty" (Dona) Thompson, Britton, and Larry (Liz) Thompson, Falling Waters, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father: Larry Thompson, and his uncle: Gordon Thompson.
