Carl M. Schulz, 85, died Friday at 10 p.m. at the home of his son Albert Schulz, on a farm in the town of Herman. The deceased leaves a widow and several children. The funeral will be Tuesday afternoon from the late residence, Rev. Helms officiating. Interment will be in Schwartzwald cemetery.

Carl Schulz came to this country from Germany and married the Stoll's daughter, Louisa. In 1857, Carl and Louisa took over the land which was covered with trees. They had to chop their way in to build a log house and barn. Then they had to clear more land so they could raise crops.
They needed some cattle so Carl walked to Milwaukee to buy a cow. He led the cow home and when the neighbor saw the cow, offered to buy it. Carl sold the cow to the neighbor for five dollars more than he paid for it and walked to Milwaukee again to buy another cow. The log home burned down in 1873, so they built the present house.
