Sammy Tunstall Vaughan, 76, a beloved husband, daddy, granddaddy, brother and friend, passed away Monday, May 4, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family after a brief and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Lakeside, 8801 Jacksboro Highway in Lakeside. Burial: Azleland Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Biggers Funeral Chapel.
Pallbearers: Nolan Morelock, Chad Shearer, Nathan Vaughan, Steven Creach, Courtney Vaughan, Slayton Vaughan, Brandon Vaughan and Colson Blair.
Honorary pallbearers: Ryan Shearer, Cody Vaughan and Jory King.
Sammy was born July 25, 1932, in Waco to Sam T. and Willie Lee Tunstall Vaughan. He had resided in the Azle area since 1943 and was baptized in Eagle Mountain Lake when he was 11 years of age.
A 1950 graduate of Azle High School where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Nina Haugen Vaughan, his loving wife for the past 58 years.
Sammy was a longtime salesman for Houston Credit Sales in Fort Worth. After retirement, he worked part-time at Larry's Carpet which is owned by his son, Larry.
He enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, arrowhead hunting and traveling with their friends. He spent many weekends throughout the 1960s, '70s and '80s on Eagle Mountain Lake teaching his kids and grandkids to waterski. He was a very hardworking individual, staying busy in his garden, flower beds and most beautiful landscaped yard. He was a dedicated Dallas Mavericks fan who watched every game.
Sammy was very proud that all eight of his children were also graduates of Azle High School as were most of his grandchildren.
He was very kind and helpful to all who knew him. He will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.
Sammy was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Willie Lee Vaughan; father and mother-in-law, Barney and Nina Haugen Sr.; brother, Charles Vaughan; and nephews, Johnny Hall and Randy Horton.
Survivors: His wife of 58 years, Nina Vaughan; eight children, daughters, Patty Vaughan, Sharon Shearer and husband, Eddie, Kristi Blair and husband, Richard; sons, Larry Vaughan and wife Debbie, Kerry Vaughan and wife Dottie, David Vaughan, Scotty Vaughan and wife, Susanne, and Kirk Vaughan, all of Azle; 19 grandchildren, Tricia Morelock Hannie, Leslie Morelock Austin, Nolan Morelock, Chad Shearer, Ryan Shearer, Nathan Vaughan, Natalie Vaughan Walley, Steven Creach, Shelly Vaughan, Cassie Vaughan, Courtney Vaughan, Casey Vaughan, Slayton Vaughan, Jory King, Brandon Vaughan, Cody Vaughan, Shelbi Vaughan, Colson Blair and Kassidy Blair; 13 great-grandchildren, Karson Moore, Kenzie Morelock, Chandler Austin, Gatlyn Shearer, Anna Shearer, Luke Walley, Trayson and Anna Creach, Brynn and Avery White, Braye Davis, Jared King and Kaden Vaughan and three more on the way; brother, Mike Vaughan; sisters, Helen Buchanan and husband, Jimmy, Carolyn Fritts and husband Sam; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bette and John Hall, Dorothy and Forrest Horton, Barney and Kathy Haugen, Kathy and Robert Sorrels, Eddie and Susie Haugen.
