Samuel was one of the first-generation Swedes from his family born in the United States. His father, Lars Johan Petersson, emigrated to Minnesota from Bjorngarden, Varmland, Sweden in 1880, returning a short time later to bring Samuel's grandparents, Per Torbjornsson and Marit F. Perssdotter to Minnesota, as well as his father's siblings, Nils Thure, Jan Frederick (who disappeared), and Christine.

Sam's mother, Kristina Charlotta Johansdotter, was born May 2, 1856 in Grolanda Parish, Västra Götland, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1883 from Skattegarden, Floby Skaraborgs län, Vastra Gotland, Sweden. She and Johan were married in Minneapolis on Aug. 28, 1886. Shortly after the marriage, Lars Johan Petersson changed his name to John Lewis Billman, and the family thereafter were known as Billman's.

Samuel was the 4th of six children in his family, and, along with siblings Daniel E., Joseph E., Mary E. Leffler (Rudy), Ida Christine Youngren (Arthur), and Paul O, they made a busy household.

John Billman was a pioneer merchant in North East Minneapolis, opening one of the earliest hardware stores on Central Avenue. From an early age, Sam developed a strong work ethic, getting a lot of experience in the family store! It was a trait he later passed on to his own children.

In 1917 Samuel opened the Billman Funeral Chapel and Furniture Store on Central Avenue. Then, in the 1940's he hired Roy Hunt, making him a partner in 1954. Together they built the Billman-Hunt Funeral Chapel at 2701 Central Avenue. (Roy took over after Samuel died).

Samuel was a proud veteran and he and Lucille are buried in Fort Snelling Veteran's Cemetery. He was a kind and thoughtful man, who loved to play Gin Rummy whenever he could.

On Dec. 5, 1917, he married Lucille Vivian Hernlund (also a Swede), and they were blessed with three children; LaVerne (1921-2004), Rodney (1926), and Shirley (1931-1986). He was actively involved in serving the community through his involvement with the Salvation Army.
