Joseph was a farmer,blacksmith and a gunsmith. He would not go war on either side but joined the Tory's.
Soon after the cival war, Plummer Williams and a man named Miller were arrested and placed in jail in Fulton, Itawamba County, Mississippi.
Joseph Palmer and several other men from Marion County rode to Fulton and broke the men out of jail. During the process of getting them out and getting away the Miller man was shot and killed. The rest of them survived.
