Mrs. William Russell
Eliza E. Hartley, daughter of George B. Hartley and Charlotte Jenkins Hartley, was born in Green county, Pennsylvania, Feb. 3, 1854 and died at her home in Buda, Illinois, Feb. 15, 1911.
She had lived 57 years and 12 days.
She had not been in robust health for some time, failing eye sight a number of months ago being an indication of her weakened physical condition. Nevertheless she kept on with her accustomed work with only an occasional break in the routine until within two weeks of her death.
Habits of industry were strong and she was happiest when at work so she was not willing to forego any of the labor she imposed upon herself.
Her final illness was of about two weeks duration and during that time a nurse, neighbors and friends cared for her.
She lived in Buda and vicinity practically all her life for she came to Bureau county with her parents when only six or eight weeks old and remained here except for a few years with her husband in Minnesota.
She was united in marriage with William Russell Oct. 1, 1891.
One child was born to this union, dying at birth.
Her husband died March 13, 1903.
Her church connection was with the Baptist denomination. She united with the Kewanee church and transferred her membership by letter to the Baptist church in Buda, Illinois, April 30, 1882 where she held membership until her death. She was a quiet, unassuming and industrious woman. Those who knew her best had an appreciation of her true worth of character and of her loyalty to those whom her friendship embraced.
Mrs. Russell's parents are both dead, her father dying June 9, 1902 and her mother Oct 4, 1903. She is survived by the following brothers and sisters; Mrs. Martha Foster, of Battle Creek, Iowa; Mrs. Emeline Johnson, of Lemore, Cal.; Leroy Hartley, of Buda, Ill.; George Hartley, of Mondamin, Ia.; and Albert Hartley, of Pearl, Ok. She had two deceased sisters; Mary E. Hartley and Mrs. Carrie Burling.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church Friday afternoon by her former pastor, Dr. C.C. Smith. The body was laid to rest by the side of her husband in Hopeland cemetery.
Those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were George Hartley, of Mondamin, Iowa, and Mrs. Martha Foster, of Battle Creek, Iowa.
