Reverend Vernon C. King, the nephew of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., died peacefully at his home on Friday, May 1, 2009.
As the pastor of St. James Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC since 2001, Rev. King was a member of the High Point Baptist Association, the Greensboro Pulpit Forum and the Greensboro Ministerial Alliance. He also was a member of the Greensboro NAACP, the National Board of Directors for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-violent Social Change.
Rev. King served on the General Baptist State Convention as a Board Member of the Ministers Council and a member of the Housing Committee. Known for his passionate preaching and beautiful singing voice, he recorded "The Lord Will Make A Way," on the Sincere Record Label.
He was born Sept. 6, 1960 in Atlanta, GA, the youngest child of Naomi B. King and the late Rev. A.D. William King Sr. Rev. King received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion in 1983 from Morehouse College. He did post graduate studies at Emory University's Candler School of Religion, concentrating in Pastoral Care and Church Administration. He was ordained at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church on April 12, 1987.
He is survived by his wife, Robin Scott-King; daughters, Victoria and Venus King of the home. Mother, Naomi B. King; Sister, Dr. Alveda C. King; brother, Rev. Derek B. King, Sr.; along with other relatives and friends.
