In the Ashland Town Reports we find that Carl was born May 31, 1921, the 2nd child of Carl and Mildred (Moodey) Mitchell of Bridgewater.

Final Tribute Paid to PFC Carl Mitchell.

Final tribute was paid Wednesday afternoon, November 17th to PFC Carl L Mitchell, of Bridgewater, son of Carl W Mitchell of Bridgewater and Mrs Daisy Mitchell of Campton, who gave his life during World War II in Italy. PFC Mitchell was a member of the Rank Division and was killed in action September 10, 1944.

PFC Mitchell, better known as Bun to his friends, was born May 30, 1920 in Ashland and attended Plymouth High School. He was employed at the Parker-Young Company Mill at Livermore Falls before entering the Armed Services. He entered the U S Army March 17, 1942 at Fort Devens. and received his training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was sent overseas August 16, 1942 where he served in a Tank Division.

Military Rites were held at Riverside Cemetery, conducted by members of the Pemigewasset Veterans Association composed of members of the American Legion, VFW and Amvets. The detail formed at Livermore School and marched to into the cemetery and to the grave. Bearers were George Durgin, Richard Sherman, Bertram Allen, Andrew St Cyr, Andrew Brands and Walter Dodge. Color Guards were Earl Dearborn, Kenneth Hobart, Corwin Burghardt, Henry Bates, Milton Pettengill and Robert Burtt. Firing Squad was Malcolm MacKenzie, Thomas Sweeney, William Chaffee, Oscar Cushing, Albert Munroe, Gerald Simoneau and Alfred Kruger. Bugler, Harold C Freeman. The services were largely attended by veterans and other friends.

Reverend Deane L Hodges, chaplain in World War II was officiating clergyman. Arrangements were in charge of Gammons Funeral Home.

Besides his parents, PFC Mitchell is survived by two brothers, Horace L of Bridgewater and Leonidas of Plymouth. >The Ashland Citizen, November 20, 1948.
