ENTERED ACTIVE SERVICE AS A DRAFTEE ON SEPTEMBER 2, 1942 AT CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. SELECTED FOR THE TRANSPORTATION CORPS, COMPLETED BASIC TRAINING, AND DEPARTED THE CONTINENTAL U.S. ON APRIL 29, 1943 BOUND FOR THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. ASSIGNED TO AND SERVED WITH HEADQUARTERS AND HEADQUARTERS COMPANY, 10TH PE THROUGH THE SICILY, ROME-ARNO AND NORTHERN APENNINES CAMPAIGNS. EARNED THE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, AMERICAN CAMPAIGN MEDAL, EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH THREE BRONZE BATTLE STARS AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A TECHNICIAN 5TH GRADE ON NOVEMBER 20, 1945 AT THE SEPARATION CENTER, FORT SHERIDAN, ILLINOIS.

Fay Brainard, 82, of Olney, died at 1:48 a.m. Thursday, January 30, 2003, at his residence.

There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Clay City Cemetery with Reverend Charles McDonald officiating. Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brainard was born on September 8, 1920, in Clay County, the son of George and
Lue (Pettyjohn) Brainard. He married Bernice Farley on August 9, 1942. She preceded him in death on December 29, 1996.

He was a retired production superintendent for Murvin Oil Company in Olney. He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Olney. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a member of the Masonic Lodge for 54 years.

Mr. Brainard is survived by his son, Gary Brainard and his wife, Elaine, of Olney; a daughter, Vicki Nichols and her husband, Nick, of Reisterstown; two brothers, Ray Brainard, of Olney, and Glen Brainard, of Pittsburg; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, three sisters and one grandson.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southeastern Illinois.
