Photo of original portrait welcome! If you notify me when you post one, I will remove this poor photocopy of the portrait.

Have you check this McDowell ancestry?
Is your branch of the family aware that you are descended from several American Revolution soldiers and patriots? I have personally proven the service and descent for Joseph McDowell, 1st, Joseph McDowell, 2nd, John White and Jane Paisley White Gowdy.

If you have membership in, you may see the ascendancy to the above-named folks on my tree using this link:
If not, you may also view the data [without the photo images, sadly] on my tree on

This last is an old database which I have not updated, so it only comes down to Willard McDowell.

Enjoy the exploration!

From: "McDowell-Walker Families of North Carolina and Tennessee," by Mary Lalla [Byrn] Turner [Mrs. Walker M. Turner], Paducah, KY, undated:

"John Franklin McDowell, son of James Lewis and Margaret Sophronia Simons McDowell, was born in McLemoresville, Tenn, 6 Oct. 1853. He moved with his family to Virginia, IL, where they lived for a time, and possibly to Coffeeville, MS. When the family returned to McLemoresville, he met and married Carrie Belva Walker, daughter of Wm. E. and Jaratia Walker, 14 Feb. 1877. Carrie [Caroline] had been born in NC, but moved to TN with her half sisters after the death of her parents."

"The couple lived in McLemoresville for some time before moving to Beaumont, TX. After the death of their eldest child, Lewis Selton, in Beaumont, they returned to Humboldt, TN, where he was, at various times, proprietor of a hotel, building contractor, factory superintendent, and timber inspector."

"After the death of his wife, 11 Dec. 1896, in Humboldt, he married Nannie Forsythe Williams, a widow with several children. In Feb. 1923, he died at Pinson, TN, at the home of his son, Ernest. Both he and his first wife are buried in Humboldt. 'All material from the information of S. W. McDowell." [A photograph is included of John Franklin, and his father, James Lewis McDowell.]
