Of Mulberry St., Philadelphia, David S. Hassinger was born about 1797, the son of Jacob Hassinger senior. He studied law and was accepted as a member of the Philadelphia Bar in 1819; worked as a practicing attorney at 110 Mulberry by 1824-1825; a real estate investor; and associate justice/alderman. Named as a co-defendant with his brother Jonathan in an 1839 bankruptcy case, the indication was that the two men were early investors in the Luzerne coal fields \endash nevertheless, unsuccessful ones at that. Hassinger died in May 1867, with properties on Market and Commerce Streets. Unmarried without issue, he left substantial legacies to his brother's children.
