Lieutenant, Post-Revolutionary War. He was born in West Caln township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John (Hans) Michael Addleman, a German immigrant who came to the U. S. on the ship "Phoenix" in 1852. His father and all three of his brothers (Andrew, John, and William) served in the Revolutionary War. Joseph served as a Lieutenant in 2nd Company, 6th Regiment, Chester County Militia from 1792-1797.
He married Sarah Pierce of Chester County in about 1786. They had ten children, all of whom were born in West Caln township. After the death of his father in 1814, Joseph and his brother William moved with their families to Wayne County, Indiana. They migrated in stages during 1817 and 1828. In 1826 his sons, John M. and Caleb, accompanied by their sister Orpha, came to Wayne county. In 1828, Joseph brought the remainder of the family.
He settled in Franklin township, near Richmond, on land that he had purchased at the Cincinnati Land Office on June 25, 1827. On this land, he built a large, log farm house that was used as a stopping place on the Underground Railroad. The Addleman Farm remained in the family until the late 1940's. The house still stands today.
Joseph spent spent the remainder of his life as a farmer. He was said to be a large, robust man and lived to be nearly 90 years of age.
