No one's really sure when Puzzle was born or where she came from (though we're guessing January 1996 somewhere in Greensboro, NC). As a pup, she was found tied to a tree behind an abandoned apartment in a rough area. She lived in a couple of different homes before meeting Jamie. They got along really well. His roommate was allergic to dogs, but fortunately his sister, Joni, was able to give Puzzle a happy home. But Puzzle's first love was Jamie, and when he was around, they were inseparable. Puzzle liked adventure, but sometimes she got in over her head. One day she decided to unlock the gate to the backyard and check out things around the neighborhood. She wasn't too smart about cars, and walked out into the street. Fortunately, the nice owner of a bar down the street passed by and picked her up. She had a tag (plus a cool computer chip implant), so she knew she'd get back home and wasn't worried at all. But you should have seen Jamie when he came to pick her up at the bar...he was pretty freaked out! Puzzle was chilling in the bar being patted and eating treats. She was a very well traveled dog, she visited all over NC...from the mountains to the sea. She frolicked at the state capitol, wandered the streets of Old Salem, visited the first Krispy Kreme ever built, braved cannons at various civil war reenactments, traveled as far north as New York, barked at cows, and chased a helluva' lot of sticks inbetween it all. Jamie and Joni had trucks with covers on the back...she considered each her "home on wheels". She had her bed, her water, and a view of the world. She loved her truck, and would stay in the back of it all day if allowed. She knew home was where the truck was, and we weren't leaving without her. Her favorite toys were stuffed squeaky toys. She knew exactly which aisle at the PetSmart to go for a squeaky toy. After she made her selection she was ready to go, and carried the toy in her mouth to the checkout. Once in the car, she took all of a minute to find the squeaker chew a hole in the toy and get the squeaker out. She also liked chewing on big nylabones. She loved swimming and especially loved pulling rocks out of the water. The bigger the rock the better. It was a challenge. The rock pictured, was the last rock she ever drug out of a river, and it weighs at least 30 lbs. She wasn't a morning dog, she would stay in bed as long as possible, and many cold, rainy mornings, she'd have to be forced outside to do her "business". She hated cold weather and had 2 sweatshirts, a purple one and a red one, and lifted her paw to get dressed. She lived with several cats, got along with most (except Arlo) and even had her "own" cat, Sally. She carried Sally in her mouth, when Sally was a kitten, and would let Sally "nurse" on her. Once when Sally was about 5 months old, 2 big german shepherd pups had her cornered. Puzzle ran off the pups, and made Sally go back to the house. Sally would climb on Puzzle's back and give her massages. Puzzle was a giver and helped save the lives of other dogs by donating blood. In June of 2008 she was diagnosed with cancer. We hoped for at least a year, but she lost her battle in October 2008.
