Civil war veteran; he enlisted for the Union as a Private in Company G, 106th Indiana Infantry on July 10, 1863 at Hillsboro, Indiana. At the time he enlisted, he was 24 years of age and was described as "5 feet 7 1/2 inches tall, with a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair."

He had been born in Wayne County, Indiana. His parents, John M. Addleman and Sarah Whitaker, were from Chester County. They had migrated to Wayne County, Indiana in 1826.

He was mustered out of Company G on July 17, 1863 and enlisted in Company K, 124th Indiana Infantry on February 25, 1864. He participated in the battles of Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee and Kinston, North Carolina, passing through them all unharmed. He was with his regiment every day since he went into the service, participating in every march, skirmish and battle in which they had engaged. He mustered out of Company K on August 31, 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina.

He married Martha Broderick on February 18, 1866. They had four sons and two daughters. George worked as a carpenter to provide for his family.

His wife only lived to be 37 years of age, preceding him in death in 1880. George lived to be 63 years of age.
