Daniel was the youngest son of Jacob and Fanny Fuchs Leighty, being 17 years of age when his father died. One of the provisions of Jacob's will was that Daniel was to have one year of schooling at the expense of the estate after which he was to be bound to a trade and it was his father's wish that Daniel "might not be in a town". In January 1837 the Orphans Court Records show Depositions and Interrogations in regard to the settlement of Jacob's Estate whereby Daniel attempted to sell his inheritance before the death of his mother. Daniel married Margaret McGinity and they were the parents of nine children, all born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania. The 1820,1830 and 1849 census records show Daniel and family to be residents of Dunbar township, Fayette county, PA. He first appears on the Tax rolls of Fayette county (Dunbar township) in 1820, occupation, Miller. He continues to appear on the Dunbar township tax rolls until 1843. The 1850 census of Fayette county shows him in German township, Fayette county. In 1857 Daniel and Margaret moved to McDonough county, Illinois where they lived the remainder of their lives. After Daniel's death Margaret made her home with her widowed daughter Kate(Mrs. Caleb Buck) of Abingdon, Illinois.
